Finding Freedom- My Journey With Yoga- 4. Masters on the Path

Updated: Apr 21

Upon meeting Maty, I sensed that I had encountered my master. Reading about her, I realized she stands as one of the most influential figures in modern yoga worldwide. The opportunity to study under her, considering my novice status, felt surreal. Arriving in Berlin for my teacher training was a mix of nerves and excitement. Led by both Maty and her ex-partner Chuck Miller, who took turns teaching due to their recent breakup, the training promised a unique perspective. Amid a room filled with lifetime Ashtanga practitioners and studio owners from across the globe, I acknowledged my position as the most inexperienced.

Stepping onto the mat, I immediately sensed the difference. The first week was a struggle, as I wondered if I could handle the physical demands. Our days started with Ashtanga Mysore sessions in the morning, followed by long practice sessions and workshops in the afternoons.

Maty's approach pushed us beyond limits, with her keen attention to details emphasising every muscle and action. Her instruction was delivered with both intensity and love, evoking deep focus. From the most seasoned practitioners to newcomers like me, Maty's inclusive nature made us all feel valued. Her authenticity, humor, knowledge, and firmness created an inspiring atmosphere, fostering growth in each of us. Chuck's teaching style diverged significantly from Maty's. In contrast, he often delved into yoga philosophy or led chants during our morning Mysore practice. While alignment wasn't his primary focus, Chuck's teachings held immense value, especially in navigating my physical limitations and injuries. Under his guidance, I learned to adapt my practice to suit my conditions, softening into poses and deepening my connection with my body.

Initially, adjusting to Chuck's teaching was challenging. However, his approach perfectly complemented the training, providing a holistic view of yoga. Amidst this journey, I naturally formed profound connections with fellow trainees who shared my mindset. As the training concluded, emotions ran high. Gratitude overwhelmed me for the unique chance to learn from these incredible mentors. This chapter marked not only the end of the course but also the beginning of a lasting appreciation for the transformative experience gained under the guidance of exceptional teachers.
Returning to my life in Tel Aviv was a bit strange. I found myself working in a bar, indulging in a fair share of drinks, all while maintaining a daily yoga practice. Initially, embracing the Ashtanga practice was a challenge, but the intensity and heat resonated with my energy levels, providing a much-needed balance. Oddly enough, public speaking was far from my comfort zone—I was inherently shy. Teaching yoga wasn't part of my plans. Yet, a dear friend managed to change my mind, finding two willing students for me. Nervousness accompanied my initial attempts, but with time, I gained confidence teaching those two individuals. Later, a successful Ashtanga teacher friend asked me to substitute her class, a decision that led to sleepless nights. Though my friend conducted a traditional led primary Ashtanga class, I opted for a different approach, drawing from my Maty-inspired training. Creating a class blending the primary series with alignment cues, I faced resistance from the students. One even whispered, "You know this is an Ashtanga class, right?" The experience was deeply unsettling, leaving me hesitant to teach public classes again. Overcoming this trauma took time and resilience.

During this time, I began offering more private classes, and my friends from the bar expressed interest in practicing with me as well. Guiding them gradually helped chip away at my shyness and fear of public speaking. The familiar faces made all the difference—leading a class of acquaintances I knew and liked boosted my confidence as a teacher. Their unwavering support remains a cherished gift, and with each class, I found myself growing more assured in my role. Staying connected with Maty continued to be a pivotal part of my journey. To my immense surprise, she believed in me and encouraged me to teach. Having the backing of such a remarkable, renowned, and knowledgeable teacher felt surreal. I had never experienced such unwavering support or acknowledgment, and receiving this attention from her was an incredibly humbling and blessed experience. She became a mentor figure, a guiding light, and a source of inspiration, akin to a dream parent. Throughout this phase, I remained engaged in regular classes and workshops. Tel Aviv offered an extraordinary yoga community, a melting pot of styles and practices waiting to be explored. This period enriched both my personal practice and my teaching. The lessons and insights I gained during those times continue to resonate in my teachings to this day. It's a constant reminder that in order to teach effectively, we must consistently practice, study, and maintain a curious spirit.
